Our Team

Charles Downie
Managing Director

Before joining the family business in 2005, Charles worked extensively in UK and European transport in senior roles with DHL/Securicor and Russell Davies. His commercial experience and dynamic vision for a business built on high quality services and an Active Ethos which encourages growth drives the development and success of the company. Charles holds a BSc (Econ) from London School of Economics and an IOD Diploma in Company Direction.  

Edward Downie
Director

Edward Downie has worked within the family business for thirty years and was appointed Director in 2003. He is passionate about operations and directs the day-to-day activities of the fleet, personnel and compliance. Edward’s intuitive understanding and appreciation for people, especially our drivers, led to the creation of our unique Driver Support Unit. Edward holds a national and International CPC.

Nick Newman
Operations Director

Nick has 30 years' experience in the haulage sector. Initially joining Bacton Transport to oversee the Fleet and Operations Support functions, he was quickly promoted to General Manager adding responsibility for ALDI operations at Sawley to his brief. Nick emphasises people and customer service as the drivers of success.  Prior to joining Bacton Transport in 2020, Nick held senior logistics roles within the freight forwarding haulage sector.

Paul Willis
Commercial Director

Paul has spent the last 30 years working in logistics covering various aspects of the supply chain with both in-house and 3PL operations. Paul’s focus on continuous improvement, teamwork and recognition of the value in in building long-term customer relationships has been instrumental in the success of Distribution Services and our Contract Services. He has a keen interest in all things petrol and likes to regularly drive out with members of his chosen car clubs.

Rick Emberson
HR Director

Rick has over 30 years’ experience in the logistics sector having held a variety of senior roles within British Armed Forces prior to joining Bacton Transport in 2015 as Network Services Manager. Rick was promoted to General Manager in 2017 and is now part of the Senior Leadership Team. A highly experienced man-manager with great customer focus. He has a passion for developing talent within his teams with a focus on process improvement to drive efficiency and manage costs.

Andy Stevenson
Finance Director

Having fun and learning are the two things Andy enjoys most working at Bacton. Andy believes working to clear strategy is the single biggest factor in achieving our goals. He is passionate about process improvement and delivering both big impact and incremental gains to improve performance. Andy brings a wealth of professional skills and diverse industry experience to the Board.

Paul Brine
Finance Manager

A Chartered Accountant since 1987, Paul joined the company in 2012 and leads the team responsible for the accounting and administrative functions of Bacton Transport. His attention to detail and passion for numbers plays a vital part in our planning and the way we use numbers to drive our financial results. Paul previously worked in SMEs across a wide variety of industrial and commercial environments.

Shaun Appleby
General Manager, Support Operations

Shaun has spent many more years behind the wheel than the desk.  After 17-years with Royal Mail in various roles, Shaun joined Bacton Transport in 2012, originally as a Night Driver taking trunk vehicles to TPN Hub.  A move to the newly established role of Driver Trainer in 2017 really allowed Shaun to find his feet off the road and he quickly realised his attention to detail and knowledge of the driving role also made him a great ambassador for compliance and safety.  This was recognised by the company with two quick promotions in 2021 from Driver Trainer to Support Operations Manager and then onto General Manager for Support Operations where Shaun now oversees the company’s compliance, Health and Safety and Facilities Management.

Lee Docherty
General Manager, Retail

Lee has developed a wealth of experience over the last 15 years in the logistics sector, covering multiple aspects of haulage and distribution from in-house Fleet Control, Compliance and Safety to Contract management.  Since joining the team at Bacton Transport, he has grown the Aldi Sawley Operation by 100% by maintaining outstanding customer service levels and skilled key account management.  Lee has a drive and determination to succeed and aspires to get it “right first time”.  He also works very closely to support his driving team in order to go above and beyond on a daily basis; going the extra mile is not just a strap line for Lee, it’s a work ethic that he expects of himself and his team.  In his words “failure is not an option”.  Lee holds an International CPC in Transport Management.

Lee York
General Manager, Operations

Lee has over 20 years’ experience in the haulage industry.  He joined the Bacton Transport family in 2009 and during his time with the company he has held a variety of roles gaining valuable experience across all aspects of the business including pallet network operations, contract management and horticulture distribution; he has managed and worked closely with many of our key account customers.  As Transport Manager Lee has successfully improved the efficient and effective running of our general haulage fleet.  He set’s himself and his team clear goals to achieve optimised performance across all levels of the operation.  Lee has recently been promoted to General Manager and now has the operational lead across all areas at Woolpit.

Ben Vincent
Transport Manager

Ben has over 10 years’ experience in the haulage industry, cutting his teeth in the freight forwarding sector before joining the Bacton Transport family in 2016 to work in our pallet network operation.  In his first few years at Bacton Transport he obtained his International Managers CPC and was then subsequently promoted to Assistant Network Services Manager.  He moved internally within the business and joined the general haulage team to broaden his skillset in mid-2021 and was very quickly promoted to Transport Manager.  An ambitious and talented member of the team Ben is a methodical thinker, problem solver and highly customer focussed.

Rob Cook
Network Services Manager

Rob joined the Bacton Transport family in early 2018 managing our Pallet Network operations in partnership with TPN and Hazchem.  He recently added the leadership of the newly formed Social Media Team to his portfolio of responsibilities.  With nearly 20 years’ experience of Pallet Networks, General Haulage and Freight Forwarding under his belt, Rob uses his knowledge and skill to get the most out of the operation, develop his team and offer the best service levels for our customers. Rob is also passionate about nurturing staff members and enjoys seeing them progress with their careers through opportunities to grow within the business. Outside of the office, Rob loves to spend time with his partner and young son and can be often found with his head in a good book.
